Jordanes

Gothic write from the 6:th century. His family had for three generations served the kings of the Alans as secreteraries. At first he lived in Trakien and Moesien. As it is told Jordanes mother was related to amalernas gothic royal family. It is probable that hehimself was dedicated to bishop of Kroton in 550. In 551 Jordanes, living in south italy, wrote his 'De origine actibusque Getarum', commonly referred to as 'Getica'. This was meant to be the gothic peoples chronicle and is a summary of Cassiodorus tvelwe books about the gothic people (these books are now lost). In his work he repeats the mistake of indentifying the gothic people with geterna and skyterna. In any case he gives us our only source on gothic history from until his own time. He starts with the sagas and tales about the gothic peoples emmigration from Scandinavia 'Scandza'. Getica was translated to swedish by Johan Peringskiöld the younger in 1719. A book was printed in 1882 edited T Mommsen in 'Monumenta Germaniae historica'.
