Pfalz

Pfalz, from latin 'Palatium'. A type of palace building, built by emperors, kings, bishops and other influential people. Pfalz estates are known from Karl the great times (See Aachen). A Pfalz is built to accomodate at least four major functions:

  1. Provide living space for the builders
  2. Being representative, with at least an Aula Regis, great hll where the ruler receives his people
  3. Provide a church
  4. Provide Economy buildings (stables, supplies and so on). The main purpose for a Pfalz was therefore not military.

    Pilgårdstone

This rune stone is located in Bogeviken, near the little town Slite on the island Gotland, an island in the middle of the baltic ocean, between the baltic countries and the Swedish Mainland.

One interpretation of the inscription, an inscription very hard to understand by the way, is "This brightly coloured stone was erected ... by Hegbiarn and his brothers Rodvisl, Öjsten ... that erected stone after Ravn in the south at Rufstein. They came to Aifur. This assignement was given by Vifil".

Bogeviken is supposed to have been one of the major harbours at gotland in these times together with Viby and Paviken-Västergarn.

    (The) Pireus Lion

A marble lion originally from Athens harbour in Pireus (former Porto Leone). The lion is famous for its rune inscription that has been made by some nordic visitor to Greece in the 11:th century. THe runes are inscribed in a dragon sling, typical the runestones in the Uppland Province. The incsription can no longer be read as the stone slowly have decomposed over time. In 1687 the lion is brought to Venice as war tribute. It can be seen outside the old arsenal in Venice, Italy. THe swedish national history museum has a copy of the lion, made in plaster.
