Well, I'm sold. I thought that S.P.O.C.K was beginning to lose it when they
released Assignment: Earth, but after seeing
them live this summer and hearing the new stuff I'll have to give in. 'Speed Of
Light' is probably the stompiest S.P.O.C.K track yet - it's no
Never Trust A Klingon, it's something completely different.
It's very catchy, inviting you to sing along, and it works great live.
The lyrics remind me of Out In Space
(or possibly Take Me To The Stars), only
this time he's just not sitting around whining about it, but taking charge and
doing some serious space travelling. If it's about the same guy, he must have
been drinking some huge amount of coffee because this time he's energetic
as hell and there's no stopping him.
The music is rather new a fresh sounding to S.P.O.C.K, something it shares
with Space Walk, and there are some
seriously pounding beats introducing the chorus, bouncier than ever. Machine funk.
Sounds almost like S.P.O.C.K-ified
Mesh type drums.
I can't quite explain it, but I've listened to this song six times straight now,
and it just puts a silly smile on my face.
'Human Decision Required' is a more soft, standard synthpop tune. It's quite
melodic, yet with a slightly unexpected chord progression. It's not an instant
hit like 'Speed Of Light', but it's a great B-side.
I was never very happy with Force Of Life,
and these mixes aren't improving things. Sure, they're quite competent dance
mixes, although perhaps a little boring. It's just that they're more or less ruined
by the "Force Of Life" vocals, which seem out of place somehow.
