Computers

This page describes the layout of my network and my collection of computers as it looked just before I moved out of my student dorm-room in the summer of 2005.

A cheapie SB Pro-clone audio card CS4236-chipset, with a very nice wavetable card, just perfect for all those games with MIDI-music. A Thrustmaster FCS is also connected.

Remembered computers

These computers are no longer in my possession, but I have kept the entries as a keepsake.

kohina

Compaq Presario 4768, strange model localized for the Swedish market, and hence missing from the online knowledge base (Compaq actually refused to admit they even made it when I mailed them and asked about it). This is by far my most bizzare computer, it requires the monitor to be restarted with the computer, or it will freeze. It also refuses to accept any further expansions, such as another NIC, so I can't use it as a router like I first intended.

The built in audio is a PnP ES1888 card that is just plain broken, to use it under Debian Linux the following had to be done:

In /etc/modules add
sb io=0x220 irq=7 dma16=5 dma=0

I had it next to my main workstation on the desk as an mp3-player, it was rather quiet after all. The monitor was an Apple monitor for Macs, but thanks to an adapter I could use it on PC.

Since it refused to boot if upgraded, and frequently lost contact with the KVM-switch I tired in the end and got rid of it.

CPU: Intel Pentium 200MMX (Complete with F00F-bug and all)
Memory: 80MB
Graphics: Integrated S3 Trio-64V+ 2MB on an Apple AppleVision multimedia monitor.
Disks: Floppy + 8.5GB IDE + 16x CDROM
NIC: 3Com 509
OS: Debian Sarge
BogoMIPS: 398.95

termserv

Server on the internal network, hosts the bootfiles for my HP700/rc terminals. The old battery on the MB had leaked, and destroyed some of the wiring, so now the BIOS maintains its data with the aid of three 1.5V batteries, soldered together.

Not counting the two IBM AT 286 machines I bought in highschool this was my first computer, and the one that took by far the biggest bite out of my wallet when I bought it. During highschool and the years that followed I ran everything from DOS to Windows NT to some strange Italian localized Linux distro on it. When I moved to the university I used it for the first years as an mp3-player, and did browsing in Netscape, all in 16MB of ram.

CPU: AMD DX4 100
Memory: 32MB
Graphics: Cirrus Logic 5429 1MB
Disks: Quantum Bigfoot 4,3 GB
NIC: NE2100
OS: Debian GNU/Linux
BogoMIPS: 49.56

no name

An Quadra 950, a gift from a fellow member of LUDD. Rigged at my desk, but turned off most of the time as it is rather noisy.

I ended up giving it away to another LUDD member, he later gave me an adapter so I could use the neat monitor on one of my PCs instead.

CPU: 33MHz 68040 and a 66Mhz 601 PPC-card.
Memory: 64MB
Graphics: Built in on an Apple Vision multimedia 17'' monitor.
Disks: 1GB IBM scsi
NIC: Built in ethernet.
OS: MacOS 7.5.5
BogoMIPS: ?

urd

Disks: None
NIC: Integrated, 10Mbit.
OS: ?
BogoMIPS:?

wilpersdec

DECStation 2100 also known as PMIN, actually my second one as I gave my first one away after getting mad at NetBSD. Rescued this one just before Ludd threw all their DECs away. It was rock solid, and stayed up without a single problem for 614 days as a samba server before it had to be shut down when Ludd moved stuff in the computer room, its place was taken by a Sparc.

CPU: 12Mhz MIPS
Memory: 24MB
Graphics: 64KB Monochrome framebuffer, unused
Disk: Lots of them, Fujitsu 640MB and some smaller ones from DEC.
NIC: Integrated 10Mbit
